New Non-Surgical and Atraumatic Treatment for Periodontal Disease and Gingivitis

After 22 years of research and 11 years in the FDA approval process, Dr. D.C. Keller of St. Louis, MO has developed and made available a promising new treatment option to promote gum and systemic health. It's called PerioProtect, and you may be a candidate for this groundbreaking treatment.

First, here is some background on what causes periodontal disease.

There are four primary "bad" bacteria associated with periodontal disease. Recent discoveries, coupled with prior knowledge, have linked these bacteria to systemic issues such as heart disease, stroke, lung disease, diabetes, pancreatic cancer and Alzheimer's disease all have direct or indirect links to these four "bad" bacteria.

There are many articles online that describe the relationships between the bacteria and the diseases. At this point, NO literature claims a causative relationship between periodontal disease and one or more of these systemic maladies; rather, as the research explains, the relationships seem to be those of association.

Here’s how PerioProtect works.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a natural releaser of oxygen. Simply rinsing with peroxide does not kill the bugs living in the gum pockets. Dr. Keller's system involves the use of custom trays, made from impressions of your mouth. These trays are soft and snug-fitting, with a special lip or ridge all along the gumline. This ridge forces a peroxide gel under the gum itself, releasing oxygen and thus killing the bacteria within minutes.

Daily use of these trays eliminates the bacteria, reduces tartar buildup, stops bleeding and promotes the reduction of pocket depths. While in the mouth, H2O2 (peroxide) breaks down to H2O (water) and O (single oxygen molecule). This single oxygen molecule (a free radical) is undesirable; therefore an antioxidant is added to the gel used with the custom trays.

Dr. Keller's treatment gives an old theme a new twist. The four "bad" bacteria cannot stay alive in the presence of oxygen, so they hide and colonize in the dark and moist pocket between the tooth and gum. Killing these bugs means halting periodontal disease in its tracks.
